      <h2>The employer’s rights and the employee’s privacy</h2>
<p>The judgement of <a title="the European Court of Human Rights" href="http://hudoc.echr.coe.int/fre-press?i=001-159906%23" target="_blank">the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR)</a> of 12 January of this year, in the case of Bogdan Barbulescu from Romania, grants the employer with the right to monitor the employees’ activities in justified cases. In this specific case, the issue was how the management board of the company in which Barbulescu had been employed checked the method in which he was performing his duties. During an audit of archive conversations, it was found that he had used the company Internet messenger for private purposes. It was proven that the Romanian citizen was engaged in personal correspondence during work hours, which, according to the employer, had a negative effect on his productivity. As a result, his contract was terminated and he sued his company for this. ECHR sustained the judgements of previous instances stating that the employer did not violate Article 8 of <a title="the European Convention on Human Rights" href="http://www.echr.coe.int/Documents/Convention_ENG.pdf" target="_blank">the European Convention on Human Rights</a> on the right to respect privacy, as the employer’s verification of the activities performed within working hours by persons employed at a company was natural and justified. Furthermore, the employer did not disclose any sensitive data of the people with whom Barbulescu kept in touch privately.</p>
<h2>What differences does the judgement make?</h2>
<p>It is said that the decision of the ECHR allows all European employers to monitor employee activities without any limitations. However, the contents of the judgement indicate that the rights in this matter always depend on the circumstances of a specific case. If companies monitor their employees only to make sure that they are performing their duties properly, as was the case with the company employing Barbulescu, they should not fear any legal consequences. This similarly applies if the control refers to the employee’s honesty or verifies whether they are not unintentionally causing a threat to the network safety. Above all, one must remember that monitoring is all about prevention and not surveillance.</p>
<h2>Good practices in monitoring employee activities</h2>
<p>In order that the monitoring of employee activities does not become a bone of contention, but brings about advantages to the entire company, one must bear in mind a few good practices related to this matter. They were remarked upon by the Portuguese judge of ECHR, Paulo Pinto de Albuquerque, who indicated that companies should base any potential monitoring on internal regulations that every employee should read and accept prior to the conclusion of the employment contract. What is more, the employer’s actions in this scope must be justified at all times. The fact that monitoring software has been installed cannot be the basis for the constant tracking of every mouse movement which the employee makes. Only when it is suspected that the employee’s behaviour, work performance or other factors may be to the company’s disadvantage, one should access the records of their professional activities which have been gathered by the software.       <h2>Fear of threats related to employee malevolence is growing in large companies. How to monitor people’s activity wisely in the security service?</h2>

      <h2>Monitoring? Do not mistake it for surveillance</h2>
<p>Many employees openly show their resentment toward the management and the IT department, when the employer considers the implementation of employee activity monitoring software. They believe it is proof of a lack of trust and that it will lead to constant surveillance. Those Orwellian visions are the result of inadequate education of the staff. Monitoring solutions are aimed to strengthen the corporate security chain and this needs to be explained to the employees in detail. How to approach such conversation? What monitoring policy should be adopted?</p>
<p>Let’s not assume in advance that each employee is a potential threat. However, each group includes some black sheep who, by their actions, can incite significant financial losses, loss of company goodwill or even the fall of the company. Therefore, the detection of malevolent actions should be a common goal for all employees. If an employee has a clean conscience, there is nothing he or she should worry about. Wise usage of monitoring tools is based on responding to incidents, not tracking of every click. Another argument for the implementation of such solutions is the growing number of threats based on social manipulation, such as spear phishing. An employee might be unaware that by clicking on a link or downloading an attachment, he or she contributed to a critical data leak or infection of the corporate network with a dangerous virus. Thanks to the monitoring tools, the administrators can quickly respond to such an attack attempt. The above policy and rhetoric should be applied by all management boards and IT departments – comments Marcin Matuszewski, Technical Support Engineer at Axence.</p>
<h2>Companies are more and more aware</h2>
<p>Large companies and corporations show the highest awareness of the losses which might occur from the unauthorized actions of their employees. The IT decision makers participating in the <a title="Orange Insights: IT Security eye of large companies and corporations" href="https://goo.gl/6h7Qam" target="_blank">Orange Insights</a> survey indicated that employee malevolence is the second worst threat to network security – right after the attack of cyber criminals. This answer was chosen by 52% of people taking part in the survey (for comparison, hacking attacks were quoted by 53%). In these companies the expenses born in relation to IT security, including network users’ activity monitoring tools, are constantly growing.</p>
<h2>What solution should you choose?</h2>
<p>When considering the choice of software for user activity monitoring, pay attention to the function allowing for the documentation of malevolent practices by an employee. If it is suspected that a person could be working to the detriment of the company, the administrator should be able to take screenshots (to catch the culprit red handed), to view the history of edited documents and visited websites and programs which have been run on the employee’s workstation. Evidence for the intended leak of strategic data can be also found in e-mail. The software should allow the monitoring of the names and sizes of sent attachments and the headers of sent e-mail messages.       <h2>New version of Axence nVision available for download!</h2>
<p>The latest version of Axence nVision software marked as <strong>8.2</strong> is now <a title="Download Axence nVision" href="en/downloads/" target="_blank"><strong>available for download</strong></a>. The new release includes some changes which improve the software functionality and many improvements facilitating the daily work of IT professionals.</p>
<h2>What’s new?</h2>
<p>Version 8.2 introduces Axence nVision <strong>inventory Agents for different Linux distributions and OS X</strong>. Up until now, devices running under these systems could only be included in the inventory taking process with use of an offline scanner. It is worth remembering that, with use of SNMP, Axence nVision also allows the monitoring of <strong>parameters of Linux servers</strong> and TCP/IP services running on such machines. The software also enables the monitoring of the environment with use of temperature and humidity sensors, which helps to protect the servers against overheating/fire/flooding. Some important changes were also made in <a title="Axence nVision - User activity monitoring" href="en/nvision-pro/users-activity-monitoring/" target="_blank">Users module</a>. The administrator is now able to specify<strong> the hourly range of monitoring</strong> in the Agent profile, which is <strong>important in the case of devices</strong>, which are used privately by the employees after office hours. Furthermore Axence nVision in version 8.2 shows the names and sizes of attachments in the monitored e-mail messages. Network administrators can use this feature to check whether an e-mail was used for <strong>strategic data leakage</strong>. Another interesting and new software function is <strong>“Schedule” event</strong>, allowing alerts to be defined, which will execute the user-defined actions at the specified time (e.g. a command to turn off all machines at 7:00pm). Axence nVision 8.2 will also <strong>automatically download and install updates</strong> for the nVision management server. <strong>The transfer of Agent icons between network maps</strong> has now been automated. When a machine with an installed Agent (e.g. a laptop) connects to nVision from a network different than the previous one (e.g. from a public WiFi hot spot), the icon of this machine will be transferred to the respective map of the network, where it is currently located. Except for the modifications described above, several smaller interface improvements have been introduced and the network filtering mechanism has been upgraded. All changes are specified in <a title="Axence nVision – List of changes in the software" href="en/list-of-changes/" target="_blank">the revisions history available on the website</a>.</p>    </div>

      <h2>Big Brother or IT security?</h2>
<p>- this is the topic of the presentation by Mr. Grzegorz Oleksy, the founder of Axence, which will take place in the main room of the Litexpo fair center in Vilnius during <a title="the IT Saugumo conference" href="http://www.itkonferencija.lt/" target="_blank">the IT Saugumo conference</a>. The participants will learn how <a title="Axence nVision - User activity monitoring" href="en/nvision-pro/users-activity-monitoring/" target="_blank">employee activity monitoring</a> <strong>improves the corporate data security level</strong>. The purpose of this is not the surveillance or inspection of the workforce, but <strong>prevention against threats</strong>, which often result from the employees’ lack of awareness during their use of the network. More and more companies are acknowledging the importance of the problem. In a poll by TNS, at the request of HP, as many as 59% of the people responsible for IT in Polish companies believe that the <strong>deployment of IT monitoring tools</strong>, such as <a title="Axence nVision" href="en/" target="_blank">Axence nVision</a>, would improve the security level within their companies.</p>

<p>Researchers from F-Secure have published disturbing data, which prove that more than <a title="Unpatched Software Vulnerabilities Continue to Plague Businesses" href="https://www.f-secure.com/en/web/press_global/news/news-archive/-/journal_content/56/1075444/1346675?p_p_auth=OUwsOt4v&amp;refererPlid=910425" target="_blank">70 percent of companies neglect the necessity to regularly update</a> software. This may result in the leakage of strategic data and tangible financial losses. It turns out that software security gaps are still a frequently used gateway for cybercriminals to penetrate into corporate networks.</p>
<h2>Cure-all</h2>
<p>A group of experts from the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team claims that by applying the current updates to known software security gaps, companies can eliminate the risk of approx. 85% of advanced persistent threats (APT). At the same time only 27% of companies have a tool for the central management of updates. Such a solution is available in the <a title="HelpDesk - Axence nVision" href="en/nvision-pro/interactive-helpdesk/" target="_blank">HelpDesk module of Axence nVision</a>.</p>
<h2>How to update software on many computers simultaneously?</h2>
<p>An administrator using Axence nVision can prepare a remote software installation on selected workstations if Axence nVision Agents are installed. First of all, based on the information gathered by <a title="Inventory - Axence nVision" href="en/nvision-pro/hardware-and-software-inventory/" target="_blank">Inventory module</a>, he/she can check which machines are running on outdated versions of the application. Let us assume the application in question is Mozilla Firefox web browser. Using smart maps, the administrator can check which computers require a software update. Then he/she creates a distribution task for the installation file, to be executed after copying, and runs it on machines without the need to leave the office and perform the updates manually on each computer. The person using the computer may receive a message that their browser will be updated. If computers do not receive the task request, e.g. because the staff has finished work for the day, it will be executed the next time the Agent and Server connect.
